Aberdeen Head & GB Trials

It was a hugely busy weekend for the club over the last few days! Alex headed down to Boston for GB trials while the majority of the club headed North for Aberdeen Small Boats and 4s head. The novices got free reign of the Loch for another training weekend preparing for Scottish Indoors in a few weeks time. Alex has trained consistently in the single since joining the club from George Watson's Rowing Club in Edinburgh. Having scooped a Bronze in intermediate sculls at BUCS Regatta at the end of last season and then ending the season with an HIR appearance in the Scottish junior squad, Alex is a seasoned Scottish sculler. He PB'd in his 2k on the Saturday and moved through to Sunday to race the water 5k assessment. Alex placed 37th out of 54, a club record at GB trials and a fantastic performance from him, with huge potential for future appearances.

The club took just the seniors up to Aberdeen this year, with the men focusing purely on sculling this past weekend and the women sweep. Saturday was the turn of two Men's quads and three Women's fours. The first quad of the day was time only, but the men posted the 4th quickest time of the division. The girls took 2nd, 3rd and 5th in Open 4+s, just missing on the top collision due to another crew steering into the top four during competitive racing.

The second division brought a medal for the women R2 4+ with the boats taking 1st, 3rd and 5th in the event. The quad was just edged out a medal by Deeside Scullers with just a few seconds between the crews. The majority of the club returned home on Saturday evening with a smaller contingent remaining to race the smaller boat divisions on Sunday.

The first division on Sunday saw the turn of the two men's doubles, men's sculler and women's pair. The doubles were time only crews, with them placing fourth and seventh in the overall standings for the division. The scull placed third in the event amongst strong performances from Aberdeen Boat Club and Deeside Scullers. The women's pair took 2nd place to a Robert Gordon/Aberdeen Uni composite.

The second division brought some more wins for the club with the smaller boats proving successful in their second run down the course. The men's double won their category, also posting the fastest time of the division. The other double took 2nd in the event, with a dominant showing. The third men's double entered novice doubles and placed 2nd in the event overall. The final victory of the day came from the women's pair who won R2 pairs. This has been the clubs most successful run at Aberdeen Small Boats but with a double win at Aberdeen Head earlier this year, we are looking forward to a return to the Dee in 2018.
